Beat Gum Disease, here at our Westchester County location

Periodontal disease, also known as Gum disease, is a silent adversary affecting millions of mouths across the nation.

Understanding Gum Disease

Gum disease is an infection of the gum tissues that surround and support your teeth. It is caused by plaque – a sticky film of food and bacteria that forms daily on our teeth. This plaque can lead to gum inflammation, bleeding, bad breath, pain and sometimes to tooth loss and other complications if left untreated.

Patient with Gum Disease

From Plaque to Periodontitis

Starts with the bacteria in your mouth which, if not removed correctly by effective brushing and flossing, can cause the formation of plaque. Plaque is a sticky substance that adheres to your teeth and over time, it hardens into tartar.

The bacteria in plaque can cause inflammation of the gums, which is known as gingivitis. If this inflammation is not treated, it can progress to an infection that damages the soft tissue and bone that support your teeth, a condition known as periodontitis.

Symptoms of gum disease

Indicators of gum disease include gums that appear red, feel tender, or bleed easily, continuous bad breath, discomfort in the teeth, or an apparent shift in the alignment of your teeth when biting. Recognizing these symptoms is crucial for prevention.

If you notice any of these symptoms, it’s essential to consult with a dentist to prevent the progression of the periodontal disease.

Daily Gum Disease Prevention Routine

Preventing gum disease is about establishing a consistent and effective oral hygiene routine.

Daily Oral Care

Daily Gum Disease Prevention Routine - Gum Disease Treatment Westchester NY
  • Brush your teeth twice a day, ideally in the morning and before going to bed, to remove plaque and food particles that can lead to gum disease. Use a toothbrush with a small head and soft bristles, and fluoride toothpaste from the age of 18 months.
  • Ensure you’re brushing along the gum line as well as the surfaces of your teeth and don’t forget to gently brush your tongue to remove bacteria.
  • Replace your toothbrush every three to four months, or sooner if the bristles are frayed.
  • Floss at least once a day. Flossing is essential for cleaning the areas between your teeth and below the gum line that your toothbrush can’t reach. If you find traditional flossing challenging, consider using floss picks or interdental brushes.

Dr. Carlos's Tips for Optimal Gum Health

Maintaining a robust routine for oral hygiene is essential. So, it’s important to consistently eliminate accumulated tartar, be vigilant for indicators of periodontal disease, and seek expert guidance on sustaining good oral health.

Avoid smoking, which can contribute to the onset and progression of gum disease. Smokers are more likely to produce bacterial plaque, which invades below the gum line, and is harder to get rid of than plaque in non-smokers.

A balanced diet that’s low in sugary foods and beverages. Sugar-rich substances can increase the risk of developing gum disease by feeding the plaque-causing bacteria.

Stress can lead to poor oral health practices and make your immune system weaker, lessening your body’s ability to fight infections, including gum disease.

Using an antibacterial mouthwash can also help reduce plaque, prevent, or reduce gingivitis, and reduce the speed that tartar forms. It is important that your mouthwash is approved by dental professionals and has the ADA (American Dental Association) seal. See our recommendations

Even with proper oral care at home, it can be challenging to remove all the plaque. Regular dental cleanings can help to remove any hardened plaque or tartar that has built up and reduce the risk of gum disease. Come to our Westchester County, NY location.

Some people are more prone to gum disease than others. This can include those with diabetes, certain genetic predispositions, hormonal changes in women, medications that reduce the flow of saliva, certain illnesses that affect your immune system, and poor-fitting dental restorations. Being aware of these risks can help you be more proactive in your prevention.

It took me a month of frustrating experiences trying to find a dentist for a simple filling repair, before I found Buchanan Dental Arts. They were kind, courteous, and got me in for an appointment a couple days later. I really appreciated that they didn’t turn this into 2 to 3 visits of unneeded appointments and procedures. They looked at the tooth, assessed it, and filled it. What’s more is I felt that I was in good hands and trusted their expertise. I’m so glad I found Dr. Carlos Garzon. I can’t imagine going anywhere else.
